Successful Annual Meeting held in Madison, Wisconsin, June 8-10

The 2008 NSPAPPH annual meeting was held in Madison WI at The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club, One West Dayton Street, Sunday, June 8th through Tuesday, June 10th, in conjunction with ASTPHND Meeting.  32 registrants representing 28 states, 6 speakers, and 2 guests

Physical Activity Collaborative Call to Action
Physical Activity Collaborative (PAC) identified a need to describe elements of public health infrastructure and leadership necessary for successful public health physical activity programs. The paper, “The Critical Need for Public Health Leadership and Capacity to Improve Health through Physical Activity:  Recommendations from the Physical Activity Collaborative,” which outlines strategies to ensure capacity is available for download here.

NSPAPPH Needs Assessment
The National Society of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health’s (NSPAPPH) purpose is to provide coordination and leadership to strengthen capacity in establishing and promoting evidence-based physical activity practice within and throughout public health agencies.  The NSPAPPH conducted a needs assessment to better understand members’ current work environment, professional experience, education, credentialing, and professional development and training needs.   View the Summary of Findings (Word doc).  For the complete document, contact your state PA practitioner.

Health Impact Assessment for Healthy Places

Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Dr. Rutt will familiarize participants with the use of Health Impact Assessment in the U.S. and cover the 5 basic steps of HIA: screening, scoping, assessment, reporting and evaluation.

The Centers for Disease Control Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity has reserved 50 lines for this event. The call-in instructions will be sent out at a later date. Meanwhile, feel free to invite your partners or others who may be interested to join you at your site for the call.

Bill Kohl Joins UT School of Public Health
Health, Activity and Nutrition Expert Bill Kohl Joins UT School of Public Health and UT Austin Faculties

HOUSTON — Harold W. (Bill) Kohl, Ph.D., who worked to build a national and global agenda for physical activity promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, will join The University of Texas School of Public Health as professor of epidemiology and disease control.

Kohl, who starts his new position Oct. 1 at the school’s Austin regional campus and the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living, will hold a joint position as professor of kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.

“Dr. Kohl is the perfect person for linking these two institutions with strong leadership, teaching and research skills in both of these important concentrations – public health and kinesiology,” said Austin Regional Campus Dean Cheryl Perry, Ph.D.
